To test starch in the food items, below are the steps to be followed.

1. Preparation of dilute iodine solution: Add 3 to 4 drops of Iodine solutions in a cup. Dilute with water untill it becomes light brown or yellow color.

2. Take a small sample of food item in the cup and add a few drops of prepared Iodine solution into it.

3. Wait for sometime to observe the color change.

Observance: If the sample food item turns dark-blue or black, then we can conclude that it contains starch otherwise it doesn't have starch.
