The first heart transplantation was done in the year 1967 on December 3rd. This surgery was conducted in South Africa at Groote Schuur Hospital at Cape Town. First heart transplantation  was operated to Mr Lewis Washkansky aged 53 years and heart donor was Denise Darvall aged 25 years who was seriously injured in a car accident.

Christiaan Barnard is a renowned heart surgeon, conducted first human heart transplantation.  In 1950s, transplantation technique was developed by a group of American researchers. In the year 1958, Norman Shumway conducted first heart transplantation on a dog at Stanford University and achieved a successful result.
