Orbital is a three dimensional region around the nucleus where in which there is a maximum propability of finding the electron is called as orbital.

Atomic orbitals has different three dimensional shapes.Based on the shape, they are mainly of four types.
1.s-orbital possess spherical shape and can accomodate maximum of 2 electrons
2.p- orbital possesses dumb bell shape and can accomodate maximum of 6 electrons.
3.d-orbital possess double dump bell and can accomodate maximum of 10 electrons.
4.f-orbital possess complex structure and can accomodate maximum of 14 electrons.
s, p, d, f are derived from spectroscopic terms such as sharp, principal, diffuse and fundamental respectively.
In an atom, the number of sub shells are equal to shell number.
Each shell consists of subshells has specific energy with slight difference.
